The science behind hand washing
Keeping our families’ hands clean is one of the most important health activities that will prevent the spread of germs and possible sickness. It is also one of the simplest!
How do germs spread?
Well there is the obvious (and gross) – poop from people or pets. I know, it’s not a very pleasant topic. But parents are well versed in toilet humor by now. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that these areas can be a source for germs like salmonella, E.coli or norovirus – all of which cause diarrhea or other ailments. These germs can get on your hands after cleaning a diaper or picking up after one of your pets.
I have attempted to count the number of times I touched my eyes, nose or mouth in a day (ugh). I completely lost track. This is one of the fastest ways germs from your hands can be transferred to the rest of your body.
Why frequent washing and sanitizing can cause dry skin
Soap and water rinses germs away, but also strips the natural, protective oils in your skin, causing it to dry out. Cracks that form on the skin can increase your risk of infection through the fissures.
Let's make it fun: sing along
The experts tell us hand washing should take 20 seconds. NPR put together the perfect list of lyrics for a 20-second scrub. Everything’s better when we have music.
Step 1: Pick a Song to Sing
We definitely lean toward Beyonce’s Love on Top:
Baby it’s you
You’re the one I love
You’re the one I need
You’re the only one I see
Come on baby it’s you
You’re the one that gives your all
You’re the one I can always call
When I need to make everything stop
Finally you put my love on top
Step 2: Wet & Lather...
…with clean, running water (, warm or cold) turn off the tap, and apply the soap. Rub your hands with the soap. Make sure to lather the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Step 3: Sing & Scrub...
…for at least 20 seconds
Step 4: Rinse and Dry...
…using a clean towel or air dry them.
Step 5: Moisturize (selfcare!)
The frequent hand washing can make your skin raw. Once you pat yourself dry and leave a small amount of dampness , and then moisturize to lock in the water. Ideal hand creams should not include irritants , such as retinol or other anti-aging serums or allergens. Our citrus trio lotion will help reduce any dryness or cracking.
